Bavaria

The Nuremburg airport was a stark contrast to Berlin’s Tegel.  It was newer (and therefore more modern in its design) and less crowded.  We quickly retrieved our bags and were met my Dieter.  We made the short walk to the car park and were shown our ride for the next few days.  Dieter’s Mercedes was ultra deluxe and with it we cruised in style.  Out on the autobahn the traffic limited us from truly testing out the capabilities of the car, but over the coming days we’d have plenty of opportunity.
 
After arriving, we drove out to Pressath, where Dieter lives, and on to Kahrmule, where our hotel was located.  After dropping off our things we went over to Dieter’s house where we met his wife, Eva.  There we ate some excellent meats, cheeses and bread as well as vegetables from their garden, along with a healthy portion of beer.
 
Our next day, after our tour of Dieter’s pharmacy, we drove out to Regensburg.  In Regensburg we walked around, took a city tour, and checked out many of the sights in town along the Danube.  For lunch we ate in a typical Bavarian guesthouse.
 
After Regensburg we drove around the Bavarian countryside checking out a few villages and village churches, including one perched atop a hill in the middle of the plains.  We drove back to Dieter’s and on the way picked up some smoked trout for dinner.
 
The following day we again drove around the Bavarian countryside (oh – and into the Czech republic too), checking out a few more churches as well as the deepest hole in the world.  The deepest hole was a bit of a curiosity, it was an interesting scientific project but the grounds are more suited to classes coming in to visit and learn about the research.
 
After lunch we made our way over to Bayreuth where we got a great tour of the Wagner Opera House.
 
That evening we ate dinner with Dieter and Eva at our hotel where we had yet another great meal, this time accompanied with Zoigl beer.  Zoigl is a local beer, that is brewed in community breweries and brewed in small batches and it is quite good.
 
On our last day in the area we drove down to Nuremburg and walked around the old town section near the train station before boarding our train to Frankfurt and on to Manheim.
