Home/2008 photos/Belize/Black Rock Lodge

We continued further into the Cayo mountains to the Black Rock Lodge After our stay at the Jaguar Paw lodge, Meghan and I drove deeper into the jungle - the Cayo area of Belize - just past the town of San Ignacio to our next stop - the Black Rock Lodge. We arrived at the Black Rock in the middle of the afternoon and while we had considered the possibility of a horseback ride to some nearby falls or arrival time didn't allow for this, which finalized the decision of whether we really wanted to go for the horseback ride or not.. So we spent the afternoon on a bit of a hike around the surrounding jungle, deeper into the river canyon. The landscape was really great and spending more time in the jungle heat was a nice change from the San Francisco (not to mention Michigan) winters whence we came. The next few days were spent on adventures around the countryside, checking out Mayan ruins and exploring the ATM cave, with each evening retreating back to the Black Rock lodge for drinks, dinner, and sleep. Our room in the Black Rock was quite nice, and since they run a fairly sustainable operation, it was not air conditioned but instead had thick rock walls, good ventilation and ceiling fans to keep cool. That along with the hammock outside for lounging or the river below for swimming made this place quite nice... though we did miss the pool from the Jaguar Paw! At the Black Rock, we had the opportunity to meet and hear about Belize from the US Ambassador to Belize, Robert J. Dieter. He provided some American-perspective history and current interpretation of Belize. On our last night we opted for dinner in San Ignacio where we could finally engage in some local cuisine (after so many meals at lodges) and on the way back we were treated to a lunar eclipse of a full moon!
